چکیده

sam (1956). Peizer and Widelock (1955), however, failed to find a consistent relationship between isoniazid sensitivity and catalase activity. Since the catalase test is easily performed and gives an immediate result, it would obviously be of value as a presumptive indicator of isoniazid resistance if it were proved to be consistently negative in isoniazid-resistant cultures. In order to obtain information on this point 116 cultures of tubercle bacilli examined in this laboratory during the last nine months for their sensitivity to anti-tuberculosis drugs were also tested for their catalase activity.

Pyruvic acid egg medium for tubercle bacilli.

Sputum culture for tubercle bacilli on a solid egg medium containing glycerol was compared with culture on a similar medium containing pyruvic acid and no glycerol. Tubercle bacilli from the sputum of five out of 99 patients grew on pyruvic acid medium but not on glycerol medium. The addition of pyruvic acid is therefore essential when an egg medium is used for the cultural diagnosis of tubercu...

Effect of isoniazid on the dehydrogenase activity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

During studies on the effect of isoniazid on the dehydrogenase activity of tubercle bacilli, the surprising observation was made that the bacteria which had been exposed to the drug reduced methylene blue or triphenyltetrazolium chloride at a much faster rate than did the untreated bacteria. The present report describes this phenomenon in detail and our attempts to elucidate its mechanism and s...

Comparison of techniques for measuring the isoniazid resistance of tubercle bacilli.

As with streptomycin and P.A.S., the introduction of isoniazid for the treatment of tuberculosis has raised the problem of the development of resistance to the drug in strains of tubercle bacilli recovered from treated patients. In the Medical Research Council (1952) trials 71% of cultures from patients who had received three months' treatment with isoniazid alone were found to be resistant. Al...

Fate of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis in Mouse Tissues as Determined by the Microbial Enumeration Technique

Observations are presented on the behavior of populations of tubercle bacilli in the tissues of mice during the administration of antimicrobial drugs. The behavior of the populations during therapy with any particular drug was different depending upon whether the tubercle bacilli were subsisting in the lung or in the spleen. Moreover, the pattern of microbial behavior was distinctive and predic...

Treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis with isoniazid and pyrazinamide: experience in 114 cases.

Pyrazinoic acid amide, now commonly known under the name Pyrazinamide or PZA and in previous years as Aldinamide, is a nicotinic acid derivative chemically related to isonicotinic acid hydrazide, more commonly designated Isoniazid or INH. A review of the early laboratory studies of PZA is omitted because of space limitations. In brief these studies indicated PZA alone to be a drug of slight to ...
